Pursue continual improvement in physical and psychological health and safety performance with the ultimate goal of zero harm.
New technologies are transforming the mining and metals industry, making it cleaner and safer.
ICMM’s Innovation for Cleaner, Safer Vehicles brings together company members, original equipment manufacturers and technology suppliers in a non-competitive space to accelerate the development of a new generation of mining vehicles, while also creating opportunities for the improvement of existing technologies. While this is a significant challenge, it also opens the door to a number of transformational opportunities.
This initiative is of benefit to the entire mining industry and is open to all OEMs and technology suppliers who would like to join. If you are a mining equipment manufacturer with a solution we want to hear from you.
Introduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission-free surface mining vehicles by 2040
There are around 28,000 large mine hauling trucks in operation – collectively emitting over 69 million tonnes of CO2, using 25 billion litres of diesel fuel annually. Electric and alternative-fuels provide lower carbon solutions to more traditional diesel-powered transportation, and ICMM is working alongside OEMs to promote operational and technological innovation that will enable mining operations to adopt GHG-free surface mining vehicles by 2040. We are now anticipating the availability of zero emission haul trucks at scale on sites before 2030 – ten years sooner than our initial target. We are doing this by increasing the operational readiness of mine sites to be able to adopt zero-emission solutions at a faster pace, including the enabling infrastructure, capacity building and clean energy procurement.
Make vehicle collision avoidance solutions available to mining companies
When it comes to safety, one size doesn't fit all – safe ways of working are built shift by shift, day by day, and over time. ICMM members are committed to continually improving health and safety performance. This requires leadership, investment, and an unwavering focus on fatality prevention. Members are working with OEMs to enable collision avoidance technology capable of eliminating fatalities from vehicle interactions to be available to mining companies, at scale.
However, technology alone is not a silver bullet – operating discipline is also a prerequisite. To be truly effective, collision avoidance must be part of a broader, capable solution. In practice, this means:
By focusing on these pillars, the mining industry can move closer to fatality elimination while embedding safe ways of working into every shift, every day.
Minimise the operational impact of diesel exhaust
ICMM members commit to continually improve health and safety. In 2024, ICMM members committed to implementing management plans for Diesel Particulate Matter in all underground sites. Through the ICSV initiative, members are working in partnership with OEMs to promote operational and technical innovations to minimise the negative impacts of DPM, and will continue to support the development and sharing of leading practice to manage these emissions.
Through the ICSV initiative, ICMM brings together our members – as representatives of the global metals and minerals industry – with many of the world’s leading original equipment manufacturers, technology solution providers, and other experts in a non-competitive space to address shared challenges. By working together, the initiative is accelerating the introduction of zero-emission mining vehicles, improving existing technologies, and eliminating collision-related fatalities in mining operations.
We do this by identifying critical industry-wide challenges that hinder progress and fostering an environment where wider trialling, collaboration, and scaling can take place. This promotes learning and enables the development of effective solutions that can be implemented across the sector.
Beyond solving technical challenges, the ICSV initiative is leveraging diverse viewpoints, experiences, and capabilities to demonstrate the power of collaboration in challenging established thinking and focusing intellectual and financial resources. Unlike traditional siloed approaches, this collective effort bridges differences, builds confidence, and fast-tracks development and implementation of solutions.
