Emma Gagen

Director, Data and Research

Emma is the Director of Data & Research at ICMM, overseeing the organization's initiatives in materials stewardship, tailings management, and global data. She joined ICMM in 2022, initially leading the mine closure and water work programmes, and subsequently serving as acting Director of the Environment portfolio across water, closure and nature-related activities.

Her experience bridges technical expertise and policy. Before ICMM, she was the lead technical advisor for the Office of the Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner, steering the research programme on best practice mine rehabilitation. Prior to her government role, Emma spent ten years as a post-PhD environmental microbiologist. Her applied research and consulting for the mining and agriculture sectors has focused on microbe-mineral interactions and biogeochemical processes essential for environmental sustainability.

Emma holds a BEnvSc (Hons I) and a PhD in microbial ecology from the University of Queensland, Australia.
